Thanks Rik I'd seen that , now you mention it. :smt023
:?: When you think something's right but can't remember the reason, does it become intuition?? :?:

There's another article in the back of my mind, other than that graph, (and there's another which looks very similar) relevant to coverslip thickness. It says you'd have to alter the tube length where the thickness is wrong, to compensate. So maybe we can use higher NA lenses designed for coverslips on bellows perfectly well, as long as we adjust the tube length?

This was it - I probably misunderstood it... http://science-info.net/docs/leitz/Lens ... -15-64.pdf

I have another infinity lens with this..

That device has a 1ish inch unthreaded part I'd have to join a camera to. Any ideas?

Charles,

Thank you for the brochure of the 210 tube length, do you have the pricelist for the CF 160mm tube length (I have the brochure; but I am looking for the price list)?

These should be used with a tube lens. The Mitutoyo tube lenses are expensive and I've only seem one for sale on Ebay in five years. The objectives are not exactly cheap either! But they have impressive working distances. Not too long before I had to pack up stuff for my move I had set up a 5/0.14 Mitutoyo M Plan Apo (wd=34mm) using a Nikkor 210mm Apo process lens as a tube lens. Works great, but makes for a big clunky arrangement on the bellows.
Take a look at the description I just posted for a Nikon Epiphot that uses infinity tube objectives for "photomicrography in both the35mm and 4x 5 in. large film formats" but yeah, it's ridiculously expensive.

Paul,

The Mitutoyo suggestion (I should have been more clear) was primarily intended for those considering "direct projection" from the objective to the sensor/film (as would be the case when used on a bellows).

The objectives on the Epiphot do not really cover a larger format by themselves, the larger formats are accommodated by various magnification photo-eyepieces in the unit. The basic image circle produced by the objective is still in the (approx) 28mm diameter range.

But those magnifiers are designed for the system, so I assumed they work well, maybe not as good resolution? I guess the practicality is, you can only get those with a full Epiphot setup. How does the 210mm f/9 large format repro lens work as the 'tube lens'? Sounds like an exotic choice!
