Purple/red is not a common colour in flies. Some do have red hairs but in this species it appears the body surface is producing the colour. It doesn't appear to be a pigment colour but more of a reflection. Under some light conditions the abdomen appears orange but under the flash this abdomen shows purple reflection.
Can't find any reference to explain those muscular hind legs.
This is a Syrphid (Chalcosyrphus libo); length: 10mm.

Eric: Guess the method was discussed (Sept 2008) before you joined (Nov 2008).
I stick a pin half way in, ventrally for the dorsal shots, in the left side for the laterral.
Apparently these are called "stick shots".
