Ant head

Post by Charles Krebs »

On my last trip into the Olympic Mountains here in WA, I came across several large ant mounds (about 3 feet wide and perhaps 1.5 ft tall) made up primarily of fir needles. This is a head shot of one of the numerous inhabitants.

Olympus BHS, Olympus 4X S Plan Apo. Stacked using Helicon Focus.

Beautifully lighted and stacked!

There are some interesting differences in the striation patterns between the antennae and and on the big plate between the antennae and mandibles. Is there perchance enough detail in your original image that you could show us a closer crop of that area?

Rik... not exactly sure what parts you want a closer look at, but here's a piece of the above shot that covers the areas you mentioned.

Bingo! That's it exactly what I wanted to see!

Lovely (as expected...)

Now can you tell me about the specimen? Dried, frozen, preserved in alcohol, merely stunned with CO2?
