Warning: Don't use Laserpointers on your camera!

Post by Antal »

Somewhere on this forum I read about using laser crossline beamer TTL to align and focus objects. The system is to light with a cheap China crossline laser (5mW) in to the eyepiece of the camera. The laser beam will go trough the lens and so help to align specimen and find focalpoint.

So I machined a beautiful holder for the laser, did some clean drawings to share here on the forum and also made a nice housing for the battery.
I used it today for the first time, it helps a lot to improve speed.

BUT:
I got dead pixel since!
Altough I did laser only when mirror were down.

THIS IS A WARNING: DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!

Sounds like a coincidence to me.

Most commercial grade sensors have at least 5% dead pixels... the camera algorithm get rid of them. The sensor, assuming unmodified, has a UV-IR cut filter installed, this blocks out effectively both UV and IR light.

Yeah, coincidence.

Laser pointer

I have a right angle finder on the camera in my stacking rig. I can point it straight up and rest an LED flashlight on it and shine light onto the stacking subject to aid in finding and aligning the specimen.

How would the laser create a dead pixel on the sensor if you only ever used it when the mirror was down?

And how would it create a dead pixel on sensor if the mirror was up  ?

I've done it several times with no issues. Chris S. , the inventor, is doing it from some years now and if there were any damage I'm sure he would had reported it.

Just avoid those nasty self-driving infrared lasers.
