Post by Adalbert »

Hello everyone,
Does anybody know, which mirrorless FF camera has the focus-bracketing (build-in) ?
If not build-in, then maybe any software solution.
EOS-R is too new for the ML :-(

Hi Adi,

Full frame mirrorless?

Nikon Z7, up to 300 images.

CamFi supposedly offers focus stacking with Sony. http://www.cam-fi.com/en/index.html

There is an app on kickstarter called Arsenal that says it will support all sony but it looks hopeless after a few people have gotten the app and focus stack is not supported yet.

Hi Robert,
Thank you for the link!
I have been stacking by focus-bracketing using Magic Lantern (with EOS 6D) up to now but I would like to change to the mirrorless FF.
Unfortunately I haven’t found any user guide of the Z7.
Maybe Helicon-Remote will support the Z7 (in the future).

Fujifilm GFX (52 MP medium format) and XT-2 (24MP APS-C) have focus bracketing. Fuji is not planning to manufacture FF format camera.

Hi Miljenko,
I have never put the focus on Fujifilm :-)

Hi Adi,

For some reason Nikon calls focus stacking, focus shift instead.

One feature that looks nice, the camera generates DOF preview of the stack.

"Focus shift" seems more logical if the camera doesn't do the combining of images.
There is ambiguity - a stack of plates is not one plate. But Zerene Stacker doesn't create a stack, it creates a plate :).

Hi Robert,
Thank you for the info!
Does it affect the Z7 or Nikon in general?

Hi Chris,
Yes and I’m interested only in the focus - bracketing ( or shifting ).
I don’t want to process the stack (create a plate :-) in the camera.

in case a Sony A7riii could be controlled via extra software with small focus steps, could then a microscope lens take a stack by mounting it to a Techart LM-EA7 motorised helicoid adapter? Or is the travel of the Techart too small (4.5mm stroke) for microscope lenses, lets say a 5x.

You can control the A7RIII focus motor with Sony's free Imaging Edge software. I did not find the step sizes to be quite right for macro focus stacking. Either too coarse or too fine. I think it would work alright in some landscape situations. Your mileage may vary.
