Zerene: sort by scale

Post by Adalbert »

Hello everyone,
Does anybody know, when is it recommended to use “sort by scale”?

Sort by scale can be helpful when images were originally shot out of order, particularly when you want to stack using DMap.

The idea is that images can usually be aligned even if they are out of order, and the resulting scale as determined by the alignment process makes a good proxy for focus distance. The workflow is align, sort by scale, then re-align and stack.

The success of this approach depends to some extent on the exact lens setup that was used when the stack was shot, as well as whether focus was stepped "by ring" or "by rail". But it does work well in many cases, and when it does work, it's a lot simpler than rearranging the images into focus order by hand.

Sort by scale will not help with stacks that are known to have been shot in focus order. It can even mess things up, particularly at high magnification where there is not much actual change in scale with focus.

Hello Rik,
“ then re-align and stack”
Do you mean “Align & Stack All (*)” ?

Sorry, I was thinking concepts. Yes, that's the spelling in the menu system.
