Crocus 2017 (added stereo versions)

Post by Charles Krebs »

When these bloom by my front steps in late February I always pick one or two every year and photograph the "interior". Here are a few for 2017.

All with MM-11/Olympus hybrid scope, Olympus M plan fluorites (5X, 10X, 20X and 50X). Canon T3i.

The individual pollen grains are about 90 microns (0.0035 inch) in diameter.

You do realise you are now responsible for the early demise of several crocuses by many doorsteps, don't you :)

Inspiring and excellent work, as always. And I just happen to have two crocuses by my back door...

Composition and lightning is very good !
I really like different magnifications of same subject to get a sense of the scale.
That is something i would like to try at some point.

Yes. The 5X and 10X are MPLFLN. The 20X and 50X are LMPLFLN.

So beautiful...

Are the pollen grains in the two last pictures (and some others) germinating on the stigma?

Yes, that is what you see there. If you look carefully at the first picture (included mainly for a sense of scale) you can barely make out a few in an overall setting.

Extremely nice! I admire your way of handling the light and composition.

Thought a couple of these might be nice in stereo (these are cross-eyed). Originally intended to be horizontal shots but with the 1024 pixel limit vertical makes a better experience. 20X and 50X

Lovely stereo!

(The second one may have a little too much separation. It gives great depth, but I perceive the pollen grains as oval, more depth than width, and I doubt that they really are.)
with the 1024 pixel limit vertical makes a better experience.
I think of the issue as being a matter of how display space gets used. Monitors have aspect ratios from about 5:4 to about 16:9. With side by side stereo, if all the pixels are used then for sure each side will be portrait, even on a widescreen monitor. But switch to shutter glasses, and the situation reverses. It's very frustrating!

On the other hand, it's great that synthetic stereo lets us do either one from the same stack, no re-shooting required.

Love the stereos - especially the first one lets you really dive into the image.
Best regards,
Michael
