This may well be old news to this group but it is the first time I have heard of it.

News to me too. Interesting that both of the macro lenses have maximum magnification of 1:2.

The 1:2 magnification ratio is common for Zeiss Rik. With the older manual Zeiss focus line made by Cosina Japan the focus was also limited to 1:2.

FYI:

Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 50mm f/2
min. focus distance 0.24 m, max. magnification ratio 1:2

Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 100mm f/2
min. focus distance 0.44 m, max. magnification ratio 1:2

Mag ratios for the older Voigtlander lenses also made by Cosina Japan in the same factory as the Zeiss. The 125mm and 180 had very nice image quality!

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm f/3.5 SL
min. focus distance 0.5 m, max. magnification ratio 1:3.5

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 125mm f/2.5 SL
min. focus distance 0.38m. max. magnification ratio 1:1

Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 180mm f/4 SL
min. focus distance 1.2 m max. magnification ratio 1:4
