Red-headed Stentor and its blue friend

Post by ralfwagner »

Hello,

recently I run across a real red-headed Stentor igneus. It is know to be slightly pink, but I have never seen before such a strong colored individual. The first pic gives an overall view. It is a manual stitch of 2 seperate pics, the stentor was a bit too long under the 40x objective.

More details in the next pic:

And, for comparison, a Stentor coerulus. This species shows not red but blue pigment grains in its pellicle.

And, as you might already know, there are even green ones out there...

Most of the time I encounter the blue ones and once or twice I have found a green one but never have I seen one that is pink. Maybe I will one day, a nice series of images Ralf, I especially like the third one. :D
