I know Chris, the scale information is important but only some pictures have this data.

Sorry, Oscar.

Oscar,

I am enjoying your image uploads and presume most of the photographs are from your archives....or were they taken with your new macro rail?

If possible, could you briefly indicate the optics used when uploading images as it helps us to further appreciate the sample and we may be able offer some suggestions in regard to light/diffusion and overall clarity.

Hi Craig,

I'm glad you like my photos. Some photos I did over from two years ago to today. The most older photos were taken with a Canon 18-55mm IS inverted with extension tubes.

The most recents, for example from "Zarza la Mayor" are made with MacroRail, bellows and a Nikon BD Plan 5x or 10x objective Nikon E Plan LWD. There are also photos taken with a Nikon M Plan 10x and 20x.

The lights I use are of three types: flash (very few), Ikea lamps (the most) and standard LED lamp with dimmer (*).

All are made with my Control Software, the oldest pictures with any very basic software developed by me over two years ago, and the rest with my new version.

Only I've got a few photos to upload, because I have no time to do more because I have a lot of work, but try to put the information in each photo.

Many photos have I done quickly, some on the first attempt due to time constraints.

Regards, Oscar.

(*) You can see how to nuild my dimmer led lamp here: http://www.tuplaneta.es/foros/viewtopic ... c&start=17. Basically have three superbright white LED for each lamp. All connected with a small PCB to USB port (5v). And use a variable resistence to made more o less intensity.

Oscar,

The most recent sample has some wonderful features as do many of your previous examples.

What is your process for determining the best lighting approach applicable to individual samples?

Hi Craig,

There is not a mathematical method to apply, mineral photographing experience gives you the proper way to photograph each mineral, position, etc..

It's like when you break the wall to get minerals, there are people that ask me but depends what tool, how, where you have to strike, intensity, etc.. And that just gives it a good eye and experience of many years banging.

In this case is similar. When I have time, I move the lights several times to find the right place and the right angle to illuminate a mineral. I measure the intensity and play with this value to properly illuminate, etc.. Sometimes the piece "not allowed photographed," it is difficult, almost impossible to explain. But the experience, have done hundreds of photos tells you how. Sorry I can not be more precise.

I always try to avoid glare and if I can, present crystallization texture.

Some photos I have done quickly by not having time, not to make a work of art, but to document the mineral and it shows in the end result.

Best regards, Oscar.
