Interesting stuff.

However, I would advise caution until we have some results.

The nikon tube lens is designed for a maximum field width of around about 22-24mm. The mitutoyo is probably not designed for a microscope, but an industrial camera. Planned field width would be tiny.

I am not saying that they won't work but that we are in virgin territory here.

Ultra wide field widths are not only pushing the boundaries for objectives, but also for tube lenses.

Continuing to look at this diagram, the diameter at the narrowest part is 36mm so ignoring the thickness of metal surrounding the glass (which from the photos is non negligible, but the thickness is unknown) then the aperture would be 200/36= f/5.5.

Also, assuming that the tube lens is a fairly simple two or three element design, could it be assumed that the entrance and exit pupils are coincident near the middle of the physical lens? In that case they are 151.2 + 29/2 = around 165mm from the sensor plane.

Could you provide more details regarding the "mounted tube lens that came with the Mitutoyo" ?

Craig
Here are some pictures of the mounted tube lens that came with the Mitutoyo 10X:

Here the tube lens with the adapter to M42 + M42 to Canon EOS adapter:

The setup (the camera is not shown, it goes with the AS shown on the picture):

The clear diameter of the tube lens is 30mm.

Is there a Google translator version available for all of this?

Craig,

I have to do some test with the mounted tube lens; but in the meantime here is an image with Mitutoyo Plan Apo 5X/0.14 and Nikon infinity trinocular head (direct projection):

A really nice result, great detail on the black body and an interesting looking ant (I assume its an ant). Very nicely lit.

So you are happy with that APO 5x?

Rogelio,

Excellent ant image! I also like your simple but apparently solid setup.

Yes, I am happy with my Apo 5x.

Is there anybody that I could send the full res. and host and post it?

Thank you to all for the comments about the ant picture (I think it is an ant).

Thank you John for posting the full res version.

The posted version of the image was with all the frame raw pre-sharpened before stacking. I have a version with all the frame without pre-sharpening before the stacking, I will try to post a comparison between them.

Actually there is an ebay auction of a Mitutoyo Plan Apo 5x starting at $275 new demo version (I bought mine for $225 used).

Yes, it is an ant (and beautifully photographed!). It is a"turtle ant" -- Cephalotes sp. There are many species, some spiny, some not; see
