Different 'Fly'

Post by NikonUser »

This NA Blister Beetle (Lytta aenea) is in the same genus as the infamous "Spanish Fly" (Lytta vesicatoria).
Beetles in this genus produce cantharidin which is claimed to have aphrodisiac properties. Fortunately, we now have Viagra.
Cantharidin is a dangerous chemical and one should not even handle these beetles; hence the common name.

The larvae are parasites/predators in the nests of ground-nesting bees.
So, look for the adults in areas where there are ground-nesting bees.
I have a colony of these bees in my garden so I suspect that that is where this adult came from.
Be very careful in handling the adults, they will give you a chemical burn that often takes a very long time to heal.
