Interesting structures. I have seen something very like this posted here in the last few months, but have forgotten just what it was. You might look through the threads going back a ways.

Hi,

I´ve got the answer at last !!

I am really pleased with myself this time!

It is the cleistothecium of a fungus in the genus Phyllactinia.

This genus is pathogenic on tree leaves causing "powdery mildew".

The cleistothecium is a reproductive structure. It falls off the leaf and parachutes down using the appendages as a parachute. The fungus usually overwinters in this stage and then releases ascospores in Spring to infect the new opening leaves. The spores germinate producing hyphae which enter the leaf through the stomata.

See these websites for a bit more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllactinia

http://botany.upol.cz/atlasy/system/gal ... %20fraxini

http://pnwfungi.org/featuredfungigallery.htm ....(see featured fungus #20)

I was way off track when trying to work out what it was with Franz´s specimen. The clue that got me thinking it was a fungus was what look like short hyphae in the first photo in this thread.

Ciao
Brian

I could not find Franz's thread, but it is not the one with the black round ball and 6 spokes coming out of it. It looked exactly like your shot in the first post above, glass laboratory beakers in different positions. Exactly like that. Can't figure out where it went, cause I spent almost an hour searching for it. :)

Maybe Franz will drop in and tell us, if we are remembering right and it is even his image.

For reference, Franz's image is here: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... hp?t=11657 .

That thread is already cross-linked to this one.

Hello Brian, jc maccagno and Rik,

this is an adventurous story! Thank you very much for your help!
I never thought it could be a fungus.

Franz
