Active Testate Amoeba -2nd image added

Possibly a Difflugia sp.
Thought I was photographing a test when pseudopodia appeared and this little guy started to move.

Excellent. Always fun to watch these move along on the cover slip. And the objectives never look better than when the subject is right on the cover slip with no water separation.

Thanks Charles.
I was mesmerized by this character. Looking at the frames I can see that I 'sat there' (actually I stand) for 56 minutes. Lots of shots but very few showing all the pseudopodia. The time it took to orientate the slide, get the focus, and push the shutter, one of more pseudopodia had extended outside the frame.
Yes, I was fortunate that this character decided to walk on the coverslip and not on the slide :D
The S Plan Apo's seem to work OK with the BHS DIC.

Further image added:
Amoeba just beginning to emerge from his test.
As earlier image but with 10x S Plan Apo

I just realized, this must be one of those amoeba that builds his shell out of bits and pieces.

Splendid. It is probably Difflugia capreolata.

Thanks Ecki, arturo, Mitch, and Ferry.

Ferry: the test appears to be made of small clear stones; looks like glass but is most likely silica sand.

NU, you are right. The test is build of very minuscule sand grains.

At least once a week I am reminded that we, as humans, need to re-write the definition of what a tool using species is. :)

"But he doesn't have hands."

"Um, well, he didn't have a hand a few minutes ago."

"Where did that come from?"

NU, I found an old drawing I once made for a magazine. Here you can see how your Difflugia is build up.

Mitch: maybe no hands but lots of feet, well, false feet = pseuodo-podia.

Excellent drawing, Ferry; thanks
In many of the tests I see the opening is flared as in Charles' specimen
