FAQ: List of close-up lenses

Post by ChrisLilley »

This list concentrates on the higher quality, multi-element achromatic lenses. Some single element designs are listed for reference, especially where a manufacturer makes both (Canon, Nikon, Scheider) and buyers might be confused.

There are many more single element lenses from Hoya, Kood, etc which are not listed here. For photomacrography with a close-up lens, a high quality achromat is strongly recommended.

The earlier ELPRO VI and VII lenses seem to have been replaced by ELPRO 1-4. However, only the ELPRO 2 is listed on the Leica site.
The Leica ELPRO 1 and 2 designed to be used with specific 50mm lenses: their optical diameter is smaller than 55mm (36mm diameter for the elpro 2) and the elements are mounted recessed in the filter mount, so you need a filter extension ring if you want to mount it onto a lens that has its front element close to the filter ring.

Chris,

This is the comprehensive link, the ISL lens now being the one to use:

From my own notes from trying various supplementary lenses:

"There are two wide-adapter lenses, the Superwide 0.42x and the Jessops Semi-Fisheye 0.42x, each with a rear Macro lens*. (The former, "Macro +8", has a 52mm and the latter a 49mm Series VII mount).

Using this on the 90mm Tamron, set at 1m, the following was found with full-frame 35mm film format:

No adapter: field ca 32cm wide

With Macro +8, field width ca 4.4cm wide, working distance ca 40cm from front of lens

With Jessops macro only, field width ca 2.2cm, working distance ca 7cm from front of lens."

The above indicates the Jessops one to give twice the magnification of the other.

This needs to be refined at some stage, the Jessops one not being to hand at present.

Thank you for this Chris – very useful information!

You could add the (discontinued) Raynox CM-3500 set. The most powerful of the three is identical to the MSN-202 diopter. The +12 lens in that set has become a real favorite of mine in combination with a 100/105mm macro lens and an APS-C sized sensor.

Scroll down on this page for mor info on the CM-3500: http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/35mmacc/egcm2000.htm

Just a few remarks:

The Leica ELPRO 1 and 2 designed to be used with specific 50mm lenses: their optical diameter is smaller than 55mm (36mm diameter for the elpro 2) and the elements are mounted recessed in the filter mount, so you need a filter extension ring if you want to mount it onto a lens that has its front element close to the filter ring.

>Sigma AML +1.6 58mm
These were available in several sizes. I've got 52, 58 and 62mm ones.

This seems like a very low price to me:

Since I last made a contribution to this topic I have been using a Marumi +3 regularly with my Tamron 90mm and images have been posted. (Not used for the current Sardinia series).

It does. I see other more recent prices, like this one from 2009 at 59 eur second hand. I have updated the main article.
