Grasshopper exoskeleton in darkfield

Post by Pau »

A grasshopper exuvia found in the garden, likely from the last moulting.
It's my first attempt to do darkfield with a so big subject (magnification aprox. 1:1.2)

EOS 20D, Apo Rodagon-D 75mm f4.5 at f5.6, Fiber optic ring light from underside. Stack of 52 images, Combine ZP Pyramid do Stack.

Pau,

Good result. Effective and appropriate lighting!

How did you support the subject over the ringlight? Did you use a glass stage plate or was the subject positioned by another method?

Very clever technique Pau and I really like the result.

What is that dark curled up "cord" that appears to run on the inside of the excuvia?

Many thanks for your comments.
Craig, the exuvia was held pinned at the end of its femur, out of the field of the image.
John, no idea about this cord, perhaps one of our entomologists could answer. It's inside the exuvia and with normal light is white (empty, I suppose).

Great image! could the curled parts be the remains of tracheae?
