Tabellaria Diatom

Post by NikonUser »

A 'boxes' Diatom; siliceous cells walls, 'boxes' joined together at corners with pads of mucilage.
This mucilage glue must be strong as these cells were collected in FW on the Bay of Fundy (Atlantic Ocean) and survived a 150 Km car
journey, being dumped into a tray, sucked up in a pipette and placed on a slide.

Quote – Holmes on ‘Entomology’
” I suppose you are an entomologist ? “
” Not quite so ambitious as that, sir. I should like to put my eyes on the individual entitled to that name.
No man can be truly called an entomologist,
sir; the subject is too vast for any single human intelligence to grasp.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr
The Poet at the Breakfast Table.

That's an amzing story. Makes you wonder what kind of survival threat caused an adaptation like that. Have the glue companies looked into this as a product? :)
