Mollusk veliger larvae

Post by Charles Krebs »

Came across a few shots I had made from my last net "drag". There were quite a few planktonic mollusk larvae, so I put a few on a slide with no cover slip. This allowed them to swim around freely and permitted some images that showed how the "velum" with it's cilia is used to move about.

The first shot shows some bivalve larvae after placing them on the slide where they had "clammed up"() from the handling. The second (2-panel) shot is of a gastropod larva swimming freely. The last two are of a bivalve larva swimming freely.

Really excellent as usual. I particularly enjoyed the two diatoms in the first picture.
