"Will the real Euplotes please stand up"

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

I'm posting this photo of a Euplotes sp. as much for the purposes of completion than pure photographic interest - please see my earlier posting "Euplotes species - my first posting...".

Ok Bernhard I concede! You were absolutely right, the ciliate in my last posting was definitely NOT a Euplotes. Ken too was clearly unconvinced.

Anyway, having now had the chance to observe several of "the real thing" busily exploring the various microscopic plant life and other debris on their slide I can see that they are a very different creature to the much slower moving and much larger ciliate in my last posting.

Here's my photo of the "Real Euplotes":

For comparison see photos 4 and 5 on this webpage:

Good shot there Bruce, amazing that you got one to stand still long enough for a photo. :D

Hi Bruce,

yeah, bingo, that's what I call an Euplotes, (E.charon, I would say).

Let me make one remark concerning your ringartefacts in the background. It's a common problem in many Digicams. See here how you can avoid them (it opened my eyes anyway):

Excellent image, by the way!!

Thanks for your comments guys.

I've checked out the ringartifacts webpage and will modify my setup as recommended.
