Zeiss focus blocks

Post by PaulFurman »

I saw these on ebay, they look nice that you don't have to saw anything off and can mount the coarse and or fine focus parts as you wish. There are three from the same seller, two of those are separated coarse & fine blocks for a more light duty scope, the other is both together for heavier use, if I'm reading the descriptions correctly. Any comments on these? I'm kind of looking for a coarse block to mount the camera and or bellows for vertical movement, ideally about 6 inches of movement and I'd guess the smaller one should be alright for this, and perhaps a fine focus for stacking steps to sit under the bellows.

seller:

'standard' 2-piece unit:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0535369591

'binocular/surgical', coarse & fine
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0195814137
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0535386963

Zeiss has some manuals in pdf.

Here's one 'standard' model which isn't quite the same but probably similar range?:
http://www.zeiss.com/C1256F8500454979/0 ... 25_ics.pdf
"Opto-mechanical data
Stand with stage focusing
with coarse drive (4mm/rot) 2
and fine drive (0.4mm /rot)
Overall lift 15 mm
2 The scale on the coarse drive (0 to 400) permits the orienting measurement of the object thickness:
1 increment corresponds to approx. 5 µm"

So only 15mm movement for the fine focus or coarse focus also?

Well, the one at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0535369591 seems to be the usual coarse/fine rack for the Universal and Photomicroscope models (from a U./P. II or III to be specific, but the rack from a P. I differs only for the paint colour).

This rack has a coarse range of approx. 24 mm and a fine range of less than 2 mm. The fine focus adjustment is very fine, and not really useful except at magnifications about 20x and above. The coarse movement is rather coarse. You must attach one side of the rack to a column (via 6 largish screws), the other side to a platform (via a proprietary dovetail, so you need also this piece, or else you must drill and tap screw holes into this dovetail).

You cannot attach the rack to a support by its top or bottom surfaces (or you will loose either the fine or the coarse movement).

I can't say much about the rack at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0195814137. I have not handled any one quite like it. It is obviously only for coarse focusing, but the movement range is probably not long.

The one at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0535386963 is for fine focusing only, probably with 2 mm range.

A 6 in. movement is quite a lot. You may get about this range with another Zeiss stand (search for eBay item 290390335912), if you remove the table and illuminator (but it gives you only coarse focusing).

This might also be something to consider: eBay item 270515876203.

These are parts of Leica racks for stereomicroscopes. This particular one has only coarse focusing, but sometimes one finds models with both coarse and fine focus. The gear is steel/brass but the rack is plastic, which makes it potentially vulnerable to stripping if overloaded. Gear and rack are quite wide, so maybe I worry for nothing. I have not seen any wear in real use (I have a slightly different one with coarse + fine focus, which is really lovely), but still it may be something to consider. It seems able to carry with ease an average camera and bellows, since it is designed for a microscope weighting perhaps a couple of kg.

From that ebay listing, it would work for me kind of like the photoshop paste-up below (probably the camera & bellows should be larger?). I don't really need it for the bellows, more for the camera and a sometimes heavy lens. For now, I have these adjustments on my stage but not enough movement for larger subjects.
Here's the full microscope those come from.

Actually, the best use is something like this, with camera/bellows vertical. I assumed from the earlier posts that this is the way you intend to use it.

The scale of your montage should be approximately right.

This is another Leica model I often use at present. The granite slab is a cheap patio/garden one, with large sorbothane feet at its bottom.
