Kidney Ore...

Post by crocoite »

...is the term given to a particular reniform habit of hematite, an iron oxide mineral and a significant ore of iron. This specimen comes from the Florence Mine, Egremont, Cumbria, England. It is highly prized by collectors. The specimen is 30mm wide.

Nice bubble shaped. :D Is its origin volcanic? Have you a "Rainbow Hematite" too? It would be nice to have a Hematite from Mars.

Hi Nikola

Not volcanic, no, although hematite can form in volcanic rocks. At the Florence Mine, it was mined as iron ore and formed in faults in limestone.

And, no, I don't have any rainbow hematite.

I got something that looks sort of like that but I am not sure if it is the same thing. I don't mess around with geological specimens so I am really in the dark about such things. Nice image you have here though. :D

Ken, maybe you have a meteorite from Mars but you don't know that yet.

Great photo Steve, that little studio is working great. We have some of this hematite in our collection.. I will have to start calling it Kidney Ore (we just call it hematite)
