Caught this little fly the other night while out slugging, I initially thought it was a midge but looking at that proboscis I'm now thinking mossie?!
Stack of 59 images shot with Nikon 10x/0.30 CF Plan objective, aligned and stacked in Zerene stacker.

I agree, male mosquito. See http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... php?t=7462 for the one that caught my attention.
This one you're showing surely has interesting structure near the tip of the antenna. Reminds me of the elaborate stuff you see on some radio antennas.
Aside: an interesting word, "antenna". The plural is "antennae" for insects, but "antennas" for radio.

A mozzie's antenna has 15 segments or flagellomeres (the lower fat one you see here is #2). The other 13 have a whorl of setae.
In females they all look like the whorl of 6 setae on segment 13 of this male.
In males the setae are very long and more numerous (>6) on segments 3-12.
In this male, segments 3-12 are short, #13 is very long with "normal female type" setae.

” I suppose you are an entomologist ? “
” Not quite so ambitious as that, sir. I should like to put my eyes on the individual entitled to that name.
No man can be truly called an entomologist,
sir; the subject is too vast for any single human intelligence to grasp.”
