for this little springtail it seems. The little guy looks so down in the dumps but we all have days like that. Nothing much to do today so I prowled around in the dirt and moss to come up with this. :roll:

OK Ken...take a look at the picture again. Right near the springtails head is a black sphere...what is that???? (looks like it has a stalk also). A very nice micro-enviroment picture.

Doug I do believe tats one of its compound eyes, or are we looking at different parts!
I aw a black springtail the other night, all on its own and covered in night dew.

That black sphere is probably a wad of algae, the moss was full of it. I have taken a look at that stuff before under the Axiostar, it is some kind of filamentous algae but I have yet to find anything that references it. Myxo's can be that small too. :wink: Thanks guys :D
