I have been lurking for qiute some time and thought it was about time I shared some of my images here...

Re: Scales on the wing of Urania leilus
Bart, welcome to image posting.*
These images are very nice -- great light especially on the shiniest scales!
I am puzzled, what does "mid curtain flash" mean?

*(One minor niggle: the posting guidelines indicate a limit of 6 images per day in the image galleries. We do make exceptions to that sometimes in special cases, but as a general matter images get appreciated more when they appear fewer at a time.)

I use the mjkzz Qool rail with IR controller. I use a longer exposure (0.6-1s) and set the speedlichts to flash after 0.3s to eliminate vibration from the rear curtain.

Ah, thanks.BartMinnebo wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 9:52 pmI use the mjkzz Qool rail with IR controller. I use a longer exposure (0.6-1s) and set the speedlichts to flash after 0.3s to eliminate vibration from the rear curtain.
So then, the technique described at https://www.mjkzz.com/single-post/2018/05/08/flashes-continuous-lights-and-flash-triggering-modes .
To clarify the explanation, the value of mid-curtain sync is not that it avoids vibration from the rear curtain. With flash, if the sensor is uniformly exposed then the pulse of light must be completed before the rear curtain starts to close, so rear-curtain vibration is not a problem. Instead, the value of mid-curtain sync is that it avoids first-curtain vibration in a general way that works well with most cameras and flashes, even cameras and flashes that do not support rear curtain sync, or do not support flash at all in electronic shutter modes.
Interestingly, although vibration from rear curtain is not a problem with flash, it can be a problem with continuous illumination and electronic first shutter curtain. With electronic first shutter curtain, if the exposure time is brief then the rear curtain can start to move before most of the exposure has happened, and that can result in motion blur. In some cases the blur will be visibly worse on one edge of the frame than the opposite, which can be very confusing! This last issue is discussed at https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ ... 135#183135 and in the surrounding thread.

Hi Bart
Very good lighting and clean scales.
I like it very much.
