Autumn mantid

I found this chap near my back door and moved him to a patio table for his safety. He moved about a bit, finally settled long enough for me to run a reasonably satisfactory focus stack, then proceeded to other ventures.

Very nice! Lots of personality in that one. It might be a Carolina mantis, but its been 30 years since I've seen them.

I like that a lot. The composition with the orange parts probably isn't one you'd find in a book, but they add warmth and contrast to the animal.
I think I'd be tempted to clone in a mirror-image antenna!

Thank you, Chris. I think the left antenna was stabilized by the leaf while the right one was being brandished about during the sequence. Hadn't thought about a clone--hmm.

Perfect stack! Many images?
The background makes this photo strong!

I haven't seen one of these creatures in quite some time. Insects have become scarce around my locale, I rarely see a housefly any more. Very nice photograph :)

Thank you, Guido and Ken. This was an in-camera compilation of 17 focus-stepped images, stacked with Zerene. I am both concerned by the apparent world-wide decline in insects and heartened by the ones that I can still find around my house; as in so many other areas, I'm not sure what it all means.
