Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals - Polarised Light
Hi all,
The imagery displayed below are some of my favourites from the culmination of years of research in experimenting with the crystallization of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. I have from the start being keeping a log book of my recipes, processes and observations. However, because of a multitude of factors at play during the crystallization process, it is a chaotic system and so you never know what to expect, sometimes the results are similar but never exact. It is truly a blend of art and science.

HI Karl it would be nice if you shared some information about the chemicals you used, are you melting the crystals or making the slides from solutions and allowing them to air dry?

Hi Robert,
All the chemicals here are from solutions and allowed to air dry.

Thanks for the information that you air dry the solutions on microscope slides. I have tried melting, air drying from different solutions, and evaporation methods with some success.
Can you share some the identity of some of the chemicals you are using. I have tested a wide variety of chemicals and techniques
and don't usually get the "flower-like" patterns you show? I have seen another photographer in the US get similar results as yours.
One of the chemicals was sulfonic acid from the hardware store.
I have an article on my web showing a variety of crystallization techniques I have used:

Even tried beer with some success.
Cheers

Wow this is absolutely brilliant! Here am I, still can't make good vitamin C slides.
I love all them, great work.

For minute I thought I was transported back to 1967............those looked like the posters on my dorm wall
Since I have retired and I've rekindled a love for photography. I don't take myself serious but I do take creating interesting and well executed images seriously.

Karl, these are truly works of art! Amazing structures! Simply beautiful.
