When visiting Langdyke Countryside Trust, Swaddywell Pit Nature Reserve near Peterborough UK on 13 August, a Great Pond Snail was spotted at the pond surface … which is normal as they 'breathe air' when required … but the specimen was also gradually 'discharging' its grit? into the water. I'm aware that they use grit to assist in grinding food but not sure if this is the same 'grit' or if its regular excreta. Any advice appreciated … thank you.
Nikon 1 J5 (monitor fitted with Zacuto optical finder) / Nikon 1 70-300mm VR plus polariser filter and extension tubes. Exposures: 300mm (810mm FF equiv) f7.1, c.1/100sec, ISO 1600.
I could not find the usual circular polariser so used a linear … which works OK with a mirrorless camera. The 300mm lens setting enables a usefully long lens to subject distance … the specimen being approx 1.5m from pond edge. Images are 'as shot' … not cropped.
