Beach Sand

Post by Smokedaddy »

Image updated (color corrected):

Just experimenting today with the MM-11 and my DiMAGE scanner lens on some beach sand from Cabo San Lucas. Then I noticed a tiny shell in the mix which is about 1mm in length. Looks like I should have stacked a few more images. :roll: I put a scale in the lower left hand corner in millimeters. Pretty sweet. Larger version is here;

Nice light and pretty image. But it looks a bit unnaturally yellow. Is the light source mismatched to the camera's color balance?

Thanks Lou ... you're exactly correct, plus I used the wrong monitor to begin with.

Here's yet another but taken with my Meiji EMZ-13TR stereoscope. Just a single shot image (no shell in this image). :roll:

Lovely, I love sand! 8) Find any forams in your Cabo beach sand sample?

No forams but I didn't have very much sand.

Since I don't live near an ocean, is a tiny 1mm shell like the one I posted a rarity?

JW, the 1mm shell you had there may be a dove shell. When snails are young, they do get very tiny.

What is that purple subject near the center of your 2nd image?

It may be more common to see grinded-down remains of broken shell pieces in sand, than complete shell.

...dunno, I'll look and see. Probably just a shell, there were a few in the mix.

I don't have a lot of experience photographing things like this, including lighting but here it is.

On another note I was quite surprised how 'fine' the sand from Hawaii was compared to other samples I have from other places. Everything I've found, although few, are around 0.5mm in width. These are from Kailua Beach. Just a quick shot with the Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 lens.
