conversion steps-mm

Post by soldevilla »

I´m sure that this ask has been answered before here, but I can´t find it.

The ask is easy: In the Stackshot, how many steps are 1 mm?

Thanks

A summary is in this post, which has links out to others.

Short answer: about 1µm, with a few errors. A 400 step motor would be a useful improvement.

1 microstep is actually 0.000496 mm = 0.496 µm. AGREE!

Yes, a 400-step motor increases accuracy twice. Theoretical ... the mechanical elements are at their limit of precision. As my problem is the electronics, I bought the StackShot thinking that if the precision was not enough, I could design a much more precise rail, and install a motor with more steps, even with a planetary reducer. The way the StackShot works is the same as the way the lathe works: it eliminates the play of the gears. But for now the accuracy of my unit is enough to work with the objective of x40. At the moment I'm not going to design anything, unless some friend asks me for mechanical help.

Thanks, ChrisR
