Menoidium crescent moon flagellate

Post by carlos.uruguay »

In this video we look at Menoidium pellucidum
A flagellate that we have found in freshwater.
It is shaped like a crescent moon, a flagellum that loses at death
A vacuole near the channel where is born the flagellum.
And crystals of a starch called paramilo

Very nice video, thank you Carlos! I watched your phase version too.

I have lots of Menoidium in my pond sample which has been receiving direct window sunlight and going on for almost a year. Was too lazy to search for their identity. Now I know, thank you!

Nice one Carlos, you always seem able to find the most interesting things in your pond.
What does it eat, bacteria? I always wonder how these thingies find enough food to be able to move around a lot and to build such an amount of food storage as well.

Best wishes, René

Hi and thanks René.
They are "osmotrophs" obtain their nutrients by osmotic absorption of substances dissolved in water.

Great video. It really gives a clear sense of the "body" shape
