blooming time, diatoms
Got a nice fresh sample in from a brackish harbour with a massive bloom of Coscinodiscus jonesianus var. commutatus, http://bibdigital.rjb.csic.es/ing/Libro.php?Libro=1006&Pagina=452
10x/0.4
20x/0.7
20x/0.7
20x/0.7, cleaned diatoms
It is nowadays renamed Coscinodiscopsis commutata, due to the two strange buds on the edge of the valve. The function of these processes is unknown. There are still plenty of things left to discover
Best wishes, René

Diatoms
Another thing about diatoms is that when you look at Diatomaceous Earth which is millions of years old, you recognize contmeporary species.

The side-on views are really informative, in addition to the great shots of the large faces. I have managed to get a member of this genus (or one similar looking one from fresh water) under a SEM once (was able to sneak a pond specimen into my semiconductor SEM for our open house...) and the pores were not nearly as uniform as I'd thought from looking at optical microscope images.
