Big plankton

Post by Raul G »

Digging into the Mar de Cortez Plankton I found this guy floating near a reef at Espiritu Santo Island in Baja California.
Too big for the microscope, but the 105mm worked fine. And a couple of polarizer filters did the trick.

WOW. We do not see many like this.....very well done :smt023. I love the gill rakes, I assume for filter feeding. Any idea on what family it might be in?

Hi guys! I'm glad you liked the photo. I have more images but they are from the same species, no brightfield :( , sorry.

But I did returned the sample to the ocean after fighting the temptation to fix it.
I don’t even have an idea of the order, a crustacean maybe?

It is a great image! It is a barnacle and I think it is the shedded skin.
