deadly to the bees

We have had very few honey bees this year. Earlier this spring I cought a picture of a honey bee while I was messing around with a reversed lens on my camera. Just by luck I cought a bee with a "varroa" mite on it's back (google "varroa mite" for more info). Apparently the mites infest a bee colony to the point they completely kill it.

Nice picture!

Google will find a lot more info if you spell it "varroa mite" (which Google suggests if you ask about "vorroa mite").

This is about as good as it gets. Sorry for the image quality but this was shot totally manually (lens reversed on a $5 adapter), shot off hand and the bee was moving. I just got lucky in timing my shot..

As to the great find, it was a total accident. I had no clue the mite was there until I looked at the pictures on the computer..
