This is lovely! :D

Great composition, the focus is perfectly placed to show off the hoverfly and pollen, and there's just the right DOF to simultaneously say "this scene is small" and also keep all the ants comfortably recognizable. The lack of noise brings out the smooth shiny texture of the hoverfly's abdomen. And finally, that bluish tint in the background provides just enough complement to bring out the cream and yellow of the flower.

Very, very nice -- thanks! :D

It does have a lot of interesting elements in one photo. It keeps you looking around for quite a while. A wonderful "full of life" photo Sue :smt023

Yes, there's a lot to like about this shot. You really did nail the composition. I've looked at this photo several times now, and keep coming back. :D

Thanks for the comments. This is actually a consolation image. When I first went out, I seen four hovers on a flower like this one and they were positioned one on each side of the center. Of course they moved before I could get setup. I was really disappointed, and then I spotted this little gathering.

Four hovers with one shot?
Well, that would be too much! 8)

Yep, it would be a focusing nightmare with the limited DOF. I probably could have gotten all four in focus (had I been able to get that image at all) using my 28-135 and cropping down, but I had my 100mm on the camera at the time.
