Sort of an abstract of a Sri Lankan Tree Viper. Captive subject, shot with a 180mm macro at f/29.

I am assuming its head is in the middle there. Nice patterns on this one.

Yep, the head is nestled amongst the body, just to left of center.

Okay, not really. Cool capture Mike. Did you ever fill a frame with just a snake? I mean nothing else in the picture than the snake skin?

A beautifully marked species Mike. Was this taken through glass (no sign of any reflection)? If so do you take any special measures to avoid reflection?

Like most of my captive snake shots, this is through glass.

Other than obvious stuff like making sure your flash doesn't reflect off the glass and back into the lens, and avoiding dirty glass, I don't have any particular suggestions beyond be prepared to have a very large percentage of your shots ruined by glare or smudged glass, and go on to do it anyway!

You often lose a bit of contrast through the glass, and this photo does have lower contrast in some portions of it, I assume because of dim reflections from ambient lighting.

Of course if loss is uniform across the picture then it's easy and fair game to recover contrast through use of curves or levels adjustment in post-processing. One of the many advantages of digital...
