These are Paramylon bodies, a kind of carbohydrate, starch. Euglena stores its photosynthetic products in this form and these paramylon bodies are characteristic for all Euglenas.pwnell wrote:Excellent! What are those cylindrical shapes inside its body?

Nice images!
Just for the record, the species known as Euglena acus (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg 1930 has been moved to a different genus and is now known as
Lepocinclis acus (O. F. Müller) Marin and Melkonian 2003.
The University of Cologne hast quite a big collection of algae strains which they culture and distribute to other scientific institutions. In 2003 the group of Prof. Melkonian, lead by Birger Marin, published a thorough review of the Euglenophytes. Many species have been transferred to other genera and the description of many genera have been emended.
The paper can be found here: http://images.algaebase.org/pdf/AC11010 ... /34464.pdf
Best regards,
