These are Paramylon bodies, a kind of carbohydrate, starch. Euglena stores its photosynthetic products in this form and these paramylon bodies are characteristic for all Euglenas.

Just for the record, the species known as Euglena acus (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg 1930 has been moved to a different genus and is now known as
Lepocinclis acus (O. F. Müller) Marin and Melkonian 2003.

The University of Cologne hast quite a big collection of algae strains which they culture and distribute to other scientific institutions. In 2003 the group of Prof. Melkonian, lead by Birger Marin, published a thorough review of the Euglenophytes. Many species have been transferred to other genera and the description of many genera have been emended.
