the diatom Helicotheca tamesis

Currently I find many diatoms from the species Helicotheca (syn. Streptotheca) tamesis in the sea plankton. I would be interested in knowing what kind of advantage has this alga from the fact that it is in a twisted form? Is the twisted form against sinking (making biger the friction with the water?). I could'nt find anything about this question in the internet.
Probably it is also for harvesting more light for photosynthesis.
