Arturo,

Beautiful images. The lorica details are especially clearly illustrated.

Great pictures, The bell animalcules are not Vaginicola but I think Thuricola. It has a valve that it can close.

And the Micrasterias is a species not found here in the north. I think M laticeps.

Splendid! Is the Thuricola from salt or freshwater?

Arturo, the valve is that little "trapdoor" you see near the mouth of the lorica, on the lower surface. It looks like an oblique line.

Arturo, My appologies for the incomplete comment. But if you find it again look what happens when it retracts. The valve will close.

A freshwater Thuricola with a wide-bottomed lorica would normally be placed in T. folliculata. However, that is normally a zoochlorella-bearing species. This might be a colorless individual.

Alternatilvely, it could be T. valvata. That species is normally described as marine, but W. Saville Kent specifically says it is found in freshwater as well.

Unfortunately, I am missing descriptions of certain species in the genus, and don't have access to Trueba's revision of Thuricola (published in the defunct journal Beaufortia).
