Is all the solutions dissolved in water ??

Yes they all were crystallized from solution.

Are you doing the dissolved "crystals" under a cover slip or uncovered?

Dissolved crystals are all without coverslips. Only when I melt crystals I use a coverslip. The image at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pwnell/8033933321/ was created by melting some crystals between the slide and coverslip.
