Nikon CFW & CFWN eyepieces->Difference?
Hey guys,
Does anyone know something about the difference in quality of the Nikon CFW and the newer Nikon CFWN eyepieces?
For example the Nikon CFW10x / 20 and a Nikon CFWN10x / 20 eyepiece.
Thanks and best regards,
Simon

Re: Nikon CFW & CFWN eyepieces->Difference?
Hi Simon,
There either was no "CFW10x / 20" or it was very rare. There are a number of Ebay listings of this eyepiece but they are all incorrect.
The "CFW 10x" had FN 18. It was part of the first generation of CF optics in the 1970s (e.g. for the Optiphot).
The CFWN 10x was part of the new and improved CFN optics in the 1980s. Most of them had FN 20 and that was written on the eyepiece as "CFWN 10x/20".
They are compatible, interchangable and both have high eyepoints, but the CFWN is the newer eyepiece, with a larger field of view.
Regards, Ichty

The CFW10x has a FN of 18, the CFWN10x came later and has a FN of 20.
Optically, they are very similar. The CFWN, however, is prone to develop haze in the front lens doublet. I know some people avoid the CFWNs because of this.

Thank you very much for the explanations.
Now I got it.
Are there any other eyepieces which are compatible with CF-free objectives from Nikon with a FN of 20mm?

Re: Nikon CFW & CFWN eyepieces->Difference?
Nikon also made eyepieces that were better corrected than the standard eyepieces, known as the CFD (FN18) and CFWND (FN20). They were really expensive and are very rare.
Apart from those, there isn't really any other original Nikon eyepieces to choose from (unless you have the UW head).
But there are also some generic Chinese 10x/22 eyepieces that perform really well with Nikon CF objectives.

Yeah. I'd definitely recommend the 10x/22 eyepieces. Thry are not only wider, but seem to have alightly better color correction, which is odd.

Hey,
I found some of these 10/22 on eBay, thanks!
But why have the eyepieces Colour correction? My Nikon CFN Planapos are fully corrected. I thought that the Nikon eyepieces do not correct any CA.
Thanks
Simon

Eyepieces need to be corrected for many different abberrations in order to be optically 'neutral'...

The nikon eyepieces seem to add a bit of their own CA, which is weird.
