Getting caterpillars to hold still

Post by PanoGuy »

Can anyone suggest a technique to make caterpillars hold still? I'm trying to photograph some polyphemus (Antheraea Polyphemus) and nothing I've tried will make them stop moving long enough to focus, let alone stack.

I have tried leaving them in the dark, in the fridge for hours, etc... but as soon as they are exposed to light (continuous since I don't have a flash) they become active again. Curiously, some left in a large fish tank overnight (without water) are motionless in dim light, but also become active when exposed with enough to photograph.

Try a few drops of acetone or ethyl acetate or something ? Maybe even flood them with CO2 ?
