Lanczos interpolation: How to pronounce it?

Post by Lou Jost »

Zerene offers several different interpolators, and most of them in the menu item are called "Lanczos" interpolators. How should that name be pronounced? Who is/was this guy?

Yesterday I found out, in a random walk through internet math and physics lectures. It turns out that, among other things, Lanczos was an assistant of Einstein, and in 1972 he participated in a roundtable talk on Einstein which was fortunately preserved for posterity:

Here he talks about his interesting life:

And about his math research:

So I learned that his name can be transliterated as "Lanchos" for English speakers.

By the looks of it the name could be Hungarian. If correct, then it would be [Lansos] (not [Lensos]!) with an s-sound in the middle.

It is Hungarian but the middle sound is "ch", not "s". Check out the video, it is fascinating.

Ah, I misread that as Lanszos...

'cz' I don't know by experience. According to http://www.pronunciationguide.info/Hungarian.html is should bepronounced [ts].
