World Microscope Day – 13th April

Post by Alan Wood »

You have probably never heard of World Microscope Day, because this is its first year. It is intended to help promote microscopy, and the date commemorates the first use of the word “microscope” on 13th April 1625.

You can find out more on the website and the Facebook Group:
https://www.worldmicroscopeday.org/
https://www.facebook.com/groups/344883400175472

The main event is a 24-hour Zoom meeting, most of which is open to everyone and will be recorded, with talks and demonstrations by amateur and professional microscopists. You can see the provisional agenda here:
https://www.worldmicroscopeday.org/page14.html

The only private part is a lecture at 8:00 p.m. that was arranged long ago and is only open to members of the Quekett Microscopical Club and the New York Microscopical Society; this is at the request of the speaker.

Hello Alan,
Many thanks for the info!
Do you know how to participate in the zoom-meeting or its parts?
Is it just streamed or is it offered as an interactive video conference?
Best,
ADi

You can now see the first 7 videos and several PowerPoint presentations from the 2021 World Microscope Day in the public area of the Quekett Microscopical Club’s website:

https://www.quekett.org/about/reports/2021-world-public

The videos are hosted on Vimeo, to get better quality than YouTube or Facebook. The Quekett account has a 5 GB weekly upload limit, and the total from World Microscope Day is far more than this, so more videos will be added in the coming weeks.
