Drone fly - Eristalis tenax

Post by AlP »

I found this Drone fly (Eristalis tenax), near frozen, clinging to a leaf bag outside. I brought it into the house to warmup and gave it a drop of honey to eat. Body length nose to butt 13mm. Dorsal view, Canon 5D MK IV with 100mm macro lens.

For excitement (?) I did something I haven't done in a few years or is it decades. I added all three extension tubes, 12mm, 20mm and 36mm to the 100mm macro lens for a three quarter view.

Something about a fly proboscis is entertaining. Same setup as previous image as fly preens itself.

Nicely done. It is a good trick to give food or water to get a subject to hold still for a while.
