Hello everybody,
In the meantime, I have tried many methods, but only one has convinced me.
And that is this one with only one reflection of a large, diffuse reflector:

Very nice, sort of like illuminated by the sun on a foggy day!

But I'm thinking it was actually from a large panel of white paper with a light shining on it to make nice soft edges.

Can you say more about the exact setup for illumination?

Hello Rik,
That was my intention to give this impression :-)
But this is the same photo, only the eyes have been treated differently.
The reflections of the neighbouring hairs have been preserved, but the centre of the eye has been replaced.
The reflection of the lens could not be eliminated with the lighting :-(

Now I am a little confused. Compared to the image that started this thread, a lot of hairs are in different places and the background has a completely different gradient.

I cannot get my eye on any image that matches this one.

Can you point me to the original photo, or post it?

A classic method for hiding the camera and lens is to put them behind something with a hole in it when shooting. For macro work, covering the camera and lens with a black cloth could probably get the job done. But retouching their reflections to black is simpler! :)

Hello Rik,
Yes, the image was mirrored vertically and the background was adjusted to the direction of the light.
The reflections of the hairs were only slightly enhanced. The eyes were created with PS.

So, the broad diffused highlight in the eyes is entirely synthetic? But the reflections of the hairs are real?
