Our 17-year cicada infestation has ended. Now the ends of the braches damages by the females when they lay their eggs are starting to come down from the trees. The female makes an incision with her ovipositor and then digs a gouge in nthe twig to lay her eggs.

We had plenty about 2 hours south of me, and I went to see the natural wonder a couple times. Alas, I did not follow thru with my plan to collect some of the egg laden twigs to later see the hatchlings. The first instar is oddly long and skinny.
