Are the eye patterns perhaps a drying artifact?

Should be. The natural appearance for this species is uniform black (with polygonal surface reflections from narrow angle light sources). Several typical pictures at http://lushgreenva.blogspot.com/2011/07 ... tiger.html .

The intricate pattern shown here is interesting. The patterns on all my specimens are much less elaborate.
