Hello everyone,

I have just created a new version of a photo, this time with LR HSL -> B/W,
which I did before with blue channel.
This time I have brightened the background a bit.

In my opinion this version is very different from the previous one.

The hi-contrast B&W treatment really works well with these subjects. Proper Gothic. Nice 'n' sharp too.

Cheers

If you have Photoshop, put a gradient map layer on top of the background. Put a Black and White adjustment layer between the background layer and the gradient map layer. I usually don’t have to adjust the gradient map but do play with the color sliders in the black and white layer. If that is not enough fun, put a hue saturation layer between the black and white layer and the background layer. Leave the gradient map always on top of the stack. You can adjust the gradient map with the mid tone slider to adjust middle gray lighter or darker and the end sliders for white point and black point. Experiment. Enjoy!

Hello BudP,

Many thanks for the hint!

So, two adjustment layers, first black and white, then gradient map, as follows.

The top layer says gradient and not gradient map. These are quite different. Make sure that the top layer is a gradient map with the key word being map. The gradient map doesn’t open a curves panel.

Hello BudP,

I have just used the following page to find the translation:
https://supportnet.de/adobe-photoshop-d ... ionen1474/
Gradient Map => Verlaufsumsetzung

So, next try:

Is this what you meant?

Yes. The black and white sliders below the horizontal gray scale determine the black point and white points respectively. The small diamond slider determines middle gray allowing you to compress either the darks or the whites. If the blacks are compressed, the whites are simultaneously expanded. I would normally not touch any gradient map sliders until I have finished with the black and white adjustment layer and the hue saturation layer which I usually include in the layer stack just above the background. I only change the sliders in the gradient map if I have not achieved a really good result. I can’t wait to see what you can do with this.
Thanks for your time and consideration,,

For personal preferences, I prefer a uniform black or white background, so I am with the "high key" picture from above. But the fly head itself is absolutely stunning and must be watched in full resolution on a big screen. There are so much details to discover - and structures, structures, structures - the big thing about b/w.

Hello Matthias,

Yes, the pictures with a completely black or white background work best.
The background with the gradient should probably be much lighter
than the original color. Otherwise it looks a bit “dirty”.
I have to try that out :-)
