Excellent quality image!
Is it a prepared (and glass covered) microscope slide?

Wonderful image of a strange-looking creature.

I have the same question Pau asked. It looks like the specimen may have been cleared (a good thing - makes the muscle fibers visible in the polarized light and adds to the aesthetic).

Does anyone know what the broad, dark 'plates' are? Sensory structures? There are lots of smaller socketed hairs, but I can't tell whether the plates would also be moveable.

Cheers, David

Hello Pau,
Exactly, it is a prepared slide covered with glass.

Hello David,
It's probably about the genal/pronotal comb:

Thanks very much, ADi. That URL got me started trying to find the function(s) of the combs. Seems to be anchoring the flea to the host's hairs.

Cheers, David
