Very nice pictures. You are using the Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens I guess? The butterfly is really enjoying the salts in the sweat on your fingers.

Thanks! Yes, it is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens.

Lovely series - esp like #3

Peculiarly exhilarating/exciting feeling when you have an insect like this on your hand !

I second #3 being my favourite. Quite unusual to see a blue doing that...?

Nice work, MacroLuv.

Depends on species, gender, and probably quite a bit more. See HERE for another picture and some discussion of this salt-licking behavior.

What's interesting to me about MacroLuv's series is that the butterfly's proboscis is uncurled in only one of the photos. For a butterfly on a finger, I would have expected the proboscis to be out and probing most of the time. This one seems just friendly!

Thanks folks! :D

Well, this one was extremely friendly! I have hundreds photgraphs of this same guy. From the EXIF data, I can conclude that I was walking around more than one hour and half with this little creature on my hand.
Speaking about friendly behavior, I bet on Sue's comment in Rik's topic (topic ID 4775): " These guys can be cooperative if the weather is a bit cool."
Indeed, they turn somehow lazy at late afternoon.
So I think this guy was enjoying the warmth of my hand rather than salinity.
